Grammy-nominated countertenor Daniel Moody has earned international acclaim for his commanding yet expressive vocal timbre and breathtaking musicianship. Praised by The New York Times for a "profoundly startling" vocal resonance and described by The Washington Post as possessing a "sweet and melancholy sound," Moody is celebrated for his ability to "pierce hearts" and "utterly silence a room."
Moody recently made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Rosencrantz in Brett Dean’s Hamlet. His extensive operatic repertoire includes title roles in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Orlando, and Rinaldo. Other notable performances include Arsamene (Xerxes), Lichas (Hercules), and Nerone in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea with Cincinnati Opera. Following his performance in Rinaldo, the San Diego Story suggested he might be defining a new vocal category: the “Helden Countertenor.” A champion of contemporary works, Moody has participated in several world and American premieres, including: George Benjamin’s Dream of the Song (Tanglewood), Aribert Reimann’s Sinnig zwischen beyden Welten (Brooklyn Art Song Society), Jorge Sosa’s Alice in the Pandemic, Hannah Lash’s Desire (Miller Theater) His recent seasons include engagements with the San Francisco Opera, Atlanta Opera, Vancouver Opera, and the Boston Early Music Festival, performing at venues such as BAM and the Tanglewood Music Festival.
In the concert realm, Moody has performed as a soloist with leading orchestras across North America, including the Atlanta Symphony, Cleveland Baroque Orchestra (Apollo’s Fire), Les Violons du Roy, and the Minnesota Orchestra. He made his Carnegie Hall debut at Stern Auditorium with the Oratorio Society of New York. His collaborations extend to conductors such as Bernard Labadie, Nicholas McGegan, and Kent Tritle. His performances have been broadcast internationally on BBC Radio 3, WGBH Boston, and Sunday Baroque.
Moody is a graduate of the prestigious Yale Voxtet. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the Peabody Conservatory and a Master of Music from the Yale School of Music/Institute of Sacred Music. His excellence has been recognized with numerous accolades, including: George London Award (2018), Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (Regional Winner/Prize Winner), Top prizes in the Handel Aria Competition and the Oratorio Society of NY Competition.
Mr. Moody has given masterclasses at Augustana University and Peabody Conservatory. He has served on the faculty at Molloy University and is currently a member of the voice faculty at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
